Nifty Structure Update — Key Levels to Watch

A detailed breakdown of Nifty's current market structure, key support and resistance zones, and what to watch in the coming weeks.

20 May 2026

Current Market Structure

As of mid-May 2026, Nifty 50 finds itself at an interesting structural juncture. The index has been consolidating in a tight range between 22,400 and 23,200 for the past six weeks — a classic accumulation or distribution pattern depending on which side of the debate you sit on.

The higher timeframe weekly chart shows a clear series of higher highs and higher lows since the October 2023 bottom. However, momentum oscillators on the daily are starting to show bearish divergence, particularly the RSI which has been printing lower highs even as price makes marginal new highs.

Key Levels

Resistance zones:

  • 23,200 — Immediate resistance and the upper boundary of the current range
  • 23,800 — Previous swing high and a psychological level
  • 24,400 — Major supply zone where institutional selling was visible in February

Support zones:

  • 22,400 — Current range low and a critical demand zone
  • 21,900 — Previous breakout zone, now acting as support
  • 21,200 — The 200-day moving average, a line in the sand for bulls

Sector-Level Observations

The rotation within the index is telling. Banking and financial services, which constitute nearly 35% of the Nifty, have been underperforming the index for eight consecutive weeks. Meanwhile, pharma and IT are showing relative strength, suggesting defensive positioning by larger participants.

Capital goods and infrastructure, which led the rally through 2024 and early 2025, are now showing distribution at highs — a classic sign of smart money exiting into retail strength.

Conclusion

The structural bias remains bullish above 22,400. A decisive close below that level opens the door for a retest of 21,900. On the upside, a weekly close above 23,200 with expanding volume would confirm the breakout and target the 24,400 zone. Until then, range-bound positioning makes more sense than directional bets.
