Lessons from 100 Trades

What 100 live trades taught me about risk management, psychology, and the difference between a strategy and a system.

Reaching the 100-Trade Milestone

Getting to 100 live trades is more significant than it sounds. The first ten are exciting. The next twenty are humbling. By the time you reach fifty, you start seeing patterns — not in the market, but in yourself. At 100, you have enough data to have an honest conversation with your equity curve.

This post is that conversation.

The Numbers

Out of 100 trades:

  • Win rate: 47% — below what I expected going in
  • Average win: 2.3R — better than I expected
  • Average loss: 0.9R — this is the one I worked hardest on
  • Expectancy: +0.19R per trade — barely positive, but positive

The expectancy number is what matters. A system can be right less than half the time and still make money, provided winners are significantly larger than losers. This took me thirty trades to truly understand emotionally, even though I knew it intellectually from day one.

The Biggest Lessons

1. Cut losses without negotiating. I cost myself approximately 6R across the hundred trades by averaging into losing positions or holding past my stop "just to see." Every single one of those trades got worse. Not one recovered to be a winner.

2. Let winners run, but have a plan. My biggest winners came from setups where I had a clear target in advance. When I improvised the exit, I left money on the table more often than I captured extra gains.

3. Trade less than you think you should. My worst stretches came when I was trading out of boredom or FOMO. Quality of setup matters more than frequency.

4. The journal is the system. Looking back at every review session, the trades I took without adequate pre-trade notes were almost always the ones I regretted. The journaling process forces clarity before entry.

What Changes Next

I will be raising my minimum setup quality threshold. Going forward, I will only enter a trade if it scores 7/10 or above on my pre-trade checklist. This will reduce frequency but should improve quality.

The next 100 trades will be the real test.
